The #8 Colgate Raiders (14-6-4) won both games this past weekend against the Harvard Crimson (5-10-2) and the Dartmouth Big Green (3-15-1). The offense exploded for the Raiders in both games as they outscored them 9-3. Julia Vandyk on the weekend stopped 65 out of 68 shots on goal making big time save after big time save throughout the games.
On Friday, the Raiders took a huge lead into the third period before fending off the Crimson rally 4-2. Olivia Zafuto put the Raiders on the board first with a power play goal five minutes into the first period. Coralie Larose then scored later in the first period on a shot that was slowed down by a Harvard defender and redirected the shot into the net to give Colgate a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Rosalie Demers scored the third goal of the game with an up close and personal backhand shot against the Harvard goaltender. That 3-0 lead was needed, as the Crimson started to rally against the goals cutting the lead 3-2 with five minutes left to play. The Raiders clamped down on defense and got an insurance goal with a minute left to play as Malia Schneider scored an empty netter to ice the game 4-2.
Saturdays game against Dartmouth had a little less drama. After a scoreless first period, the first line of the Raiders were too much for the Big Green to handle. Shae Labbe scored three minutes into the second period to give Colgate a 1-0 lead. Malia Schneider then passed the puck to Jessie Eldridge who casually put the puck into the Dartmouth net to double the lead 2-0. Labbe would tack on another goal on a nice high shot that hit the crossbar and into the net to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead. Bailey Larsen would keep the scoring onslaught going with a goal of her own, rocketing a puck into the back of the net to make it 4-0 going into the final period.
Eldridge scored again with just three minutes left to go in the third period to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead. Dartmouth then snuck a goal in with just two minutes left to play, but the game was all over at that point. Colgate completed the ECAC weekend sweep with a 5-1 win against Dartmouth.
With Princeton having a three week break from hockey action, the rest of the ECAC will try and play catch up and play their way to the top spots in the standings. This coming weekend will be very important as the Colgate Raiders will take on the #7 Cornell Big Red in a two game series in Hamilton, NY on Friday and in Ithaca, NY on Saturday. Four points and league standings are on the line as this series will be the games to watch this weekend. Go Gate!
