We just need to focus on games one game at a time. Look at me expanding my horizons and talking about the other team in Buffalo, who is probably the hottest team in Western New York in this very moment. The Buffalo Sabres (16-6-2) have won nine straight games since November 8th. Only one game out of those nine have a winning margin of more than one goal. Three games have been won in regulation, three games have been won in overtime and three games have been won in a shootout. Absolutely crazy to think that this team is not getting enough love in the NHL. It is still early in the NHL season and so we can’t fault the analysts but the Sabres need a little more love.
The Sabres have also enjoyed brief moments in this win streak in which they were first place in the eastern conference and first place in the league. Then Nashville and Tampa Bay play their games and they are back in second which is both annoying and exciting. The Sabres have not had this much success in two years. This comes from building through the draft and of course some great offseason pickups.
Jeff Skinner is a man possessed. He is always lurking by the net like the Angel of Death just waiting to send the pucks to Valhalla for a score. He is currently second in the league in goals with 18. 9 of those goals have been scored during this streak. I don’t know why Carolina thought they needed to let him go but you know what, I don’t care. This guy is good at hockey.
Skinner is good but other Sabres need to be recognized. Captain Jack Eichel is also pretty good leading the team with 23 assists. 10 of those dishes have been on this hot streak. Tage Thompson has been getting in a groove and scored a couple of goals in the past two games. Rookie Rasmus Dahlin is also starting to get comfortable which means he is developing right on schedule. The last two players I will highlight is goaltenders Carter Hutton and Linus Ullmark. These two guys have been playing as well as any other goalie in this league only allowing 2.52 goals a game. This team is awesome and when this team is on tv, they are a must watch.
People should be watching them tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. as they take on the San Jose Sharks (12-8-4) at the KeyBank Center. The last time these two teams met was on October 18th in which Logan Couture had a hat trick leading the Sharks to a 5-1 victory. This Sabres team will have a tough time again as the Sharks have a some good lines which feature former Sabre forward Evander Kane and defensemen Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson.
The key to winning this game is to repeat what they have been doing all along. Don’t panic, stick to the game plan and opportunities will arise. The penalty kill will be key in this game as both teams are ranked in the top ten in penalty kills. If the Sabres limit the penalties, they win this game. Ten is the magic number tomorrow night and hopefully they get it. Let’s go Buffalo!
