The #8 Colgate Raiders (2-2) women’s ice hockey team will be on the road again against a familiar non-conference foe in the #9 Northeastern Huskies (1-0-1) this Friday and Saturday. The last time these two teams met was in the NCAA quarterfinals last year in Hamilton, New York where Colgate defeated Northeastern 3-1. Every time these two teams met it was always a battle. Northeastern is always well prepared against their opponents and will not give up goals easily.
In this matchup there is not a lot to talk about in Northeastern’s team but that is because they just started the regular season a week ago. This team only lost five seniors from last year and so they do have mostly the same roster as before. Northeastern will more than likely have more to play for in this series. This is sort of a revenge weekend for the Huskies as they went 0-3 against the Raiders a season ago, which included a loss in the tournament. This is also a chance for them to boost their resume and leapfrog Colgate in the rankings if they can pull off a sweep.
Colgate meanwhile seems to have found chemistry amongst themselves. Great for them, bad for the the teams they face. Everybody on the team contributes via goals, assists and special teams the last game. Two things to focus on this series will be consistency and goaltending. Can the Raiders play consistently in both games and find a sweep this weekend? If they do, this protects their resume and at least keeps them set at #8 depending on other teams results. There is also a question on who will be between the pipes between the senior Julia Vandyk and Junior Liz Auby. I believe they will both play this weekend as they both played really well against Ohio State.
My prediction this weekend will be that Colgate wins both games against Northeastern but they will be two of the toughest games they will have in order to get those wins.
